Things are looking bad for the Yankees. The Bronx Bombers were swept at home by their eternal rivals the Boston Red Sox this past weekend, pushing their losing streak to eight games. The Yankees haven't had a slump this long since 1995.
The Yanks have lost 13 of 18 games in August, and their current skid puts the team at 60-64; last in the American League East (and the only team in the division with a sub-.500 record), and nine games behind the Seattle Mariners for the final AL Wild Card spot.
Prior to the Boston series, parody news account New York Porch Sport took to X Social Media (formerly Twitter) to add insult to injury with a fake story about Triple-A outfield prospect Everson Pereira, who is the #3 prospect in the Yankees' organization and 80th-ranked overall according to mlbpipeline.com:
The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders are hardly a "powerhouse", but at least they're on the plus side of .500 and have a chance to move up in the International League East standings as they host the division-leading Lehigh Valley IronPigs this week.
While it's highly unlikely that Pereira would refuse a Major League call-up, especially to a franchise as revered as the Yankees, it would be humorous if any prospect did choose to stay in the minor leagues on a team in a playoff hunt rather than make their major league debut on a team that is most assuredly not; even though the Yankees themselves refuse to believe as such.
(UPDATE: Pereira was, in fact, called up and made his Major League debut in the Yankees 2-1 loss at home to the Washington Nationals on August 23; going 0 for 3 but drawing a walk.)
In any case, the Yankees find themselves in a position they rarely hold: as one of the laughingstocks of the league. And from now until at least early November, people from all over- especially New York media and fans themselves- are going to continue to take shots at a Yankees season which their fans find wholly…
