The Columbus Crew, fresh off a win that decided the fate of St Louis City in the Leagues Cup, have made changes to the future defensive posture leading into October.

As the Crew set their sights on an MLS Cup playoff spot, the loss of Lucas Zelarayán to Al Fateh SC in the Saudi Pro League blurs the vision. Lucas, the Tigres attacking midfielder turned Crew member, is a veteran of the sport: Lucas was honored as the Most Valuable Player for their second-ever MLS Cup win in 2020. Since making his start for the crew back in 2019, Zelarayán has recorded 100 shots on target, 38 goals, and 30 assists. Lucas also holds the longest free-kick goal record in the MLS.

Columbus already lost Milos Degenek to the Serbian side's Red Star Brigade. But they have seem to have found their stride in Camacho.

Rudy Camacho, transferred from CF Montréal to Columbus, where the center-back was exchanged for $400,000 General Allocation Money (GAM). Camacho, another veteran caliber like Lucas, has been paramount in Montréal's defense. Camacho has also tallied seven goals in his six seasons with Montréal. Camacho will join Columbus head coach Wilfried Nancy, who left Montréal last year. Columbus already acquired center-back Yevhen Cheberko from Croatian NK Osijek, as well as (former) Vancouver Whitecap's midfielder Julian Gressel.

Columbus plays tonight against Club América, sitting comfortably in the Eastern Conference's sixth spot.
